Mamidikaya Kobbari Pachadi : A Mother’s Strength in a Spoonful
This year, Women’s Day was extra special; it wasn’t just about celebrating the incredible women in our lives, but also marking the joy of our housewarming. Amidst the festivities, one dish stood out on the menu: Mamidikaya Kobbari Pachadi (Raw mango and coconut chutney)—the perfect blend of raw mango’s tang, coconut’s subtle sweetness, and a fiery kick from chilies.
Though I couldn’t have it that night due to the ongoing pooja, I knew it must have been a hit. But this dish isn’t just about taste for me—it carries a memory, a lesson, and a reminder of my mother’s quiet strength.
I was around 12 years old when I first had my own little “disaster” with this chutney. Back then, landlines ruled our homes, and my mother was busy on a call while making this pachadi in the mixer. She had one simple instruction for me—"Don’t touch anything." But, of course, when you tell a curious child not to do something, that’s exactly what they end up doing.
I had never used a mixer before, but I had seen my mom expertly whip up chutneys in it. How hard could it be? So, I pressed the button. And in that moment, I realized why she always held the lid firmly while grinding. Within seconds, the chutney exploded—splattering all over the kitchen walls, the counter, and me. I stood there frozen, my heart pounding.
My mother rushed back, anger flashing in her eyes. But as she saw me frantically trying to clean up the mess, her anger melted away. That’s the thing about mothers—their love overrides everything. She didn’t scold me after that moment; instead, she helped me clean up, shaking her head with a knowing smile.
But this memory isn’t just about a kitchen mishap. It’s about the immense strength of women, a strength the world often fails to acknowledge.
I’ve watched my mother battle sleepless nights due to health issues, silently wiping away her tears so that I wouldn’t notice. And yet, every night, she would say, “I’ll sleep in five minutes. You come sleep beside me.” I would drift off in the warmth of her embrace, while she lay awake, protecting my peace.
But it’s not just about mothers—it’s about all women. Women carry an ocean of resilience within them, often without recognition. It’s not just about enduring hardships—it’s about how effortlessly they hold space for others, even in their own struggles.
So, this Mamidikaya Kobbari Pachadi isn’t just a chutney for me—it’s a reminder of my mother’s love, patience, and quiet strength. And every time I taste its tangy, spicy, and soothing flavors, I think of her.
Happy Women’s Day to all the incredible women out there—your strength, your love, and your unwavering spirit deserve to be celebrated every single day. 💜
